In 2012, the first Foodshare Mobile Truck rolled into our parking lot and we distributed food to 72 of our neighbors in need. Today, the Fern Street Food Ministry operates five programs. Run by over 100 volunteers, our programs serve an average of 300 clients each week. Our volunteers pick up, deliver, sort, pack and distribute thousands of pounds of food each month. Our donors generously support us with contributions of food and monetary gifts that allow us to purchase food and supplies.
The mission of the Fern Street Food Ministry is to alleviate hunger in our community. We strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those experiencing food insecurity, to significantly improve their access to healthy food and to serve all in the spirit of love, honoring the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Every other Monday morning, in all types of weather, we distribute perishable food to all who seek assistance.
Every other Monday morning, with the Mobile Foodshare truck outside, we welcome the local community inside for a free hot and hearty breakfast. Our dining hall has become a place for our neighbors to congregate with friends, enjoy a nutritious breakfast and receive donated items to take home.
In existence for over thirty years, this program began our work feeding the hungry. Once weekly, volunteers make and deliver sandwiches to the House of Bread in Hartford.
Each week during the school year, we provide backpacks filled with nutritious food to West Hartford Public School students who need weekend food support.
Our newest program opened its doors in 2016. The third Saturday of every month, we provide non-perishables, fresh produce, frozen meats, poultry, dairy and eggs (when available) to qualified recipients.
