Music and the arts are an important part of our life together at the Universalist Church. The inspiration and beauty that music offers is an essential part of our worship together. The joy and fellowship we experience from improv and theatre connects us together as members of the congregation and the wider community, too. Join us on Sunday mornings for worship or some weekends for performances and, if you love to make music, we invite you to talk with our Director of Music, about becoming part of our music ministry!
Everyone is welcome to sing and deepen their musical skills with the choir. Joining together in weekly rehearsals and performances is a great way to hone your craft and develop lasting friendships. The Choir provides music for Sunday worship services, holiday services and special events.
The Universalist Church Choir rehearses most Wednesday nights from 7:00 - 9:00 PM.
You can be part of this fun ensemble playing our treasured Whitechapel hand bells. Our Bell Choir contributes music to our church services throughout the year and occasionally performs at other venues. The ability to read music is not necessary. Experienced bell ringers will help new members master ringing technique and music fundamentals such as rhythm and note-reading. Membership is open to teens and adults. If you have never rung a hand bell before, come to the choir room and give it a try! We rehearse most Sunday mornings from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM.
Children in grades two through six are welcome to join the Universalist Children's Choir! The Children's Choir sings approximately four times per year and participates in the annual Christmas Pageant. We sing a fun and eclectic repertoire of accompanied unison songs and simple a capella part songs - the focus is placed on building essential vocal production and music literacy skills while strengthening part independence and building ensemble.
The Universalist Jazz Ensemble is a flexible group of musicians anchored by our Director of Music on the tenor saxophone. We enliven worship about once every couple of months by leading hymns in a jazz style and by playing jazz standards.
The UU Players promote and foster an inter-generational opportunityfor the presentation of and participation in community-based theater. A fundamental precept is to be all-inclusive and thus provide an opportunity to every person expressing a desire to participate, and, who is concomitantly able to dedicate the requisite time and energy.
Each year we host a variety of fundraisers. Some support the congregation, ministries beyond the congregation, or performers from nearby and far away. In the past years, we've hosted UniversalLaugh: “Improv Comedy Night”, “Cabaret Night” (live music and dancing), Paint Parties (art and storytelling), and special vocal performances like the German Choir Jena Gospel Choir. These performances are open to the public.
